Dr. Richard Bailey- Historian, Author, and Civil-rights Activist born on October 29, 1947, is a renowned American historian best known for his work on the Reconstruction era in Alabama and its African American leaders. He has authored several books on the subject, including “Neither Carpetbaggers Nor Scalawags,” which was chosen as a supplemental school text by the Alabama Board of Education, making him only the second African American author to receive this honor in the state. In addition to his writing, Bailey has played an active role in preserving historical sites and establishing historical markers.

Bailey is a native of Montgomery, Alabama, and grew up in the Centennial Hill neighborhood. He is the youngest of 12 children born to Raymond Bailey Sr. and Lottie Parks Bailey.

He attended Booker T. Washington High School and earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Alabama State University. He also has a master’s degree from Atlanta University and the PhD from Kansas State University.

Dr. Bailey worked as a research specialist at the Aerospace Doctrine, Research and Education Center at Maxwell Air Force Base for 30 years, retiring in 2011.

Apart from his notable publications and historical preservation efforts,Dr. Bailey has also focused on educating others on the history of African Americans in Alabama. He has led several black history tours and has been a vocal advocate for the recognition of Henry Allen Loveless.
