Mic Check – President Of The JTA Winston Smith – Educators Struggles In Jamaica, Lack Of Vacation, Low Wages & Sudden Deaths

Winston R Smith - President of the Ja Teachers Assoc.Our special guest on Mic check this morning is Winston Smith, Principal of the Golden Spring Primary School in St. Andrew. Smith was installed as the 57th president of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) on August 16, 2021 at the Ocean Coral Spring Hotel in Trelawny. In his address,. Smith pledged to ensure that the JTA will continue being a force to be reckoned with.

Smith, who hails from Rose Hall, St Elizabeth obtained his Master in Education Administration from the University of the West Indies, Mona. Prior to assuming the position of principal of Golden Spring Primary, he served as Principal of Constitution Hill Primary School and taught at Papine High School and Stony Hill All Age School.  

Smith’s accomplishments and awards include being a:
– Member of the Education Transformation Oversight Committee (ETOC)
– Member of the Board of the National Council on Education
– 2019 recipient of the WBC (Ben) Hawthorne Award for outstanding contribution to Education and the JTA
– In 2015 he received a long service award from Papine High School for outstanding leadership and service to the school.
– in 2014 he was the recipient of the St. Andrew Parish President Award for service to the St. Andrew Parish Association.
