Michael Wiltshire was born on the Caribbean Island of Jamaica in St. Andrew’s Parrish.  He received his early education at St. Mary’s College High School.  In 1976 he migrated to the United States where he continued his education at Howard University in Washington D.C.

In 1980, Dr. Wiltshire graduated from Howard University with a B.S. degree in Micro-Biology/Mathematics.  He earned a B.S. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Maryland at College Park, and his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Mathematics and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.  Dr. Wiltshire’s focus of study was an “Integrated Approach to the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics and Science”.

Dr. Wiltshire has a long and distinguished career in Education.  In 1984 he started his career as a Biology and Mathematics teacher with the New York City Department of Education and has taught Mathematics and Science at various NYC Department of Education schools.  He served as the Chair for the Mathematics and Science Department at Islip Public School, and later as the Director of Mathematics and Science for the Islip Public School District in Suffolk County, N.Y.

 

Dr. Wiltshire began his current tenure as Principal of Medgar Evers College Preparatory School (formerly Middle College High School) in 2001.  At Medgar Evers College Preparatory School, Dr. Wiltshire has transformed the school from a 9 – 12, low performing school into one of the premier College Preparatory Schools in the nation.  Under Dr. Wiltshire’s guidance, Medgar Evers College Preparatory won the national Inspiration Award given in recognition of the most developed AP program in the United States.  Currently Medgar Evers College Preparatory School offers more than 24 Advanced Placement courses, as well as the prestigious AP Capstone Diploma.  The school, in conjunction with Medgar Evers College, also offers three Associate Degrees in Teacher Education, Computer Science and Biological Science.

While simultaneously serving as Principal of Medgar Evers College Preparatory School, Dr. Wiltshire served as Executive Principal at Boys and Girls High School in Bedford Stuyvesant from 2015-2017.  At Boys and Girls High School he was instrumental in restoring the institution to good academic standing, ultimately facilitating its removal from the NYCDOE SERR list.

In addition to his public-school investiture, Dr. Wiltshire has also had a career in higher education.  He has taught at CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the capacity of Adjunct Professor of Mathematics, Pace University’s Graduate School of Education and Long Island University’s Graduate School of Education, in the capacity of Adjunct Professor of Education at both institutions.

Dr. Wiltshire is the recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious “William Harris Award for Excellence” in recognition of his outstanding service in connecting students to college and success, the “Pinnacle Award” by Medgar Evers College, and the “African Spirit Award” in recognition of his emphasis on inclusion of African and African American culture in education.

Dr. Wiltshire is married to Sharon Wiltshire.  They have four kids, Dr. Jelani Wiltshire, Omari Wiltshire, Imani Wiltshire and Sadiki Wiltshire and four grandchildren.
